Becoming YOU! Women in Healthcare Leadership Retreat Project

2023 paacs women retreat 1 1 1536x1024

I met the incredible Dr. Britney Grayson on another project during which we connected quickly in our shared vision to support women in healthcare leadership. Dr. Grayson has been training surgery and anesthesia residents from several African countries since 2020. Based on the results of a survey her training workgroup compiled, she invited me to build and facilitate a retreat experience for 15 female residents to provide focused professional and personal development opportunity in building their very own leadership approaches.

African Female Healthcare Professional Experience

Dr. Grayson’s workgroup survey and research found that the experience, issues, and needs of women in medicine in Africa are different, especially in surgery. Findings include that despite women in Africa accounting for 40% of the medical student population, only 7% of the African surgical workforce is female.

53.1 % of female respondents stated that sometimes or often they are treated negatively by coworkers based on their gender (compared to male respondent percentage of 91.8% who have experienced this rarely or never)

72.4% of female respondents stated that sometimes, often or almost daily they are treated negatively by patients based on their gender (compared to male respondent percentage of 93.8% who have experienced this rarely or never).

Findings also noted significant discrepancies in gender-based differential treatment in the hospital (workplace) and community setting.

Bringing Becoming YOU! to High Impact Women in Africa

The planning has begun! In light of survey data and Dr. Grayson’s experience, we are planning a retreat experience with the goals of:

● Creating a safe space to discuss these issues and collaboratively work together to note their impact, supporting one another in a strategy to build awareness and resource the community in addressing them

● Building healthy community via sharing, networking, mentorship, peer support

● Encouraging residents via opportunity to illuminate personal and professional strengths, recognize ways to leverage these in support of self and other; respectfully inform, train, advocate

● Improving recruitment, retention, and well-being of African female surgery trainees, faculty, volunteers, leadership

Identity-First HR: Reclaiming the People Function as the Strategic Backbone of Organizations

For years, I’ve worked with leaders, teams, and organizations across industries. One insight has remained constant: sustainable transformation doesn’t begin with new tools, new strategies, or new metrics. It begins with identity clarity. That’s why I coined the term identity-first leadership and have expanded it to a training offering, “Identity-First Teaming: From Me to We”. ... Read more

What Is Identity-First Leadership? A New Framework for Leadership and Coaching

Leadership isn’t just about what you do. It’s about who you are—and who you’re becoming. For decades, leadership development has focused on skills, competencies, and behaviors: how to delegate, how to communicate, how to strategize. These matter—but they don’t explain why many highly skilled leaders still end up burned out, disconnected, or on autopilot. The ... Read more

Leader Identity Clarity: The Antidote to Leading on Autopilot

Most leaders don’t wake up and say, “Today I’ll lead on autopilot.”But if we’re honest, many of us slip into it without realizing: back-to-back meetings, urgent churn through emails, cuaght up in constant change. We keep moving, but not necessarily with awareness. Autopilot leadership feels safe and necessary—it keeps the wheels turning. But over time, ... Read more

Why Leadership Behaviors Don’t Stick Without Identity

You’ve seen it before: A leader goes through a training. They learn how to motivate the team, engage a crucial conversation, delegate, hold one-on-ones, or communicate more clearly. For a few weeks, they try out their new skills. But soon old patterns creep back in. Or worse, the “new behaviors” vanish under pressure. Why? Because ... Read more

The Missing Metric: Why Knowing Your Self-As-Leader Is Your Most Powerful Performance Strategy

In our relentless pursuit of productivity hacks, meticulously tracked performance metrics, and the latest leadership frameworks, we’ve inadvertently overlooked the very foundation upon which all of these rest: identity clarity. Finding Your Leadership Sweet Spot: Balancing Connection and Boundaries

We often think of leadership in terms of strategy, execution, and achieving results. Beyond the Model: Where Liminality Meets the Stages of Change

When organizations embark on change, they usually reach for familiar tools: Gantt charts, strategy decks, maybe even a change curve. These are essential and I recommend them.
